- Additional description
Satgas Pamtas from from Yonif 1 Marinir arrested two Papuan teenagers in Brasa River, Dekai, Yahukimo, because they were accused of being part of an armed group on 22nd February 2024. The arrests were part of a manhunt for the perpetrators of the shooting down of the Wings Air commercial plane on 17th February 2024.
Police contacted by BBC News Indonesia confirmed that the two teenagers had no connection to the pro-independence armed group, but were still detained as witnesses. By the end of May 2024, there was no news that they had been released.
According to local residents, the two teenagers had just finished bathing in the river and were planning to cross the river to the garden. They were only carrying a Morning Star-patterned noken and a cell phone. "The bullets and firearms whose photos were distributed did not belong to them," said the witness as written by the BBC.
The two teenagers are strongly suspected of being treated inhumanely and are suspected of being victims of torture.
Until the end of March 2024, the two teenagers were detained at the Papua Police as public prosecutors' prisoners.
On 14 June 2024, after being detained for more than 110 days, MH and BE were further prosecuted. Charged with intentionally assisting in the commission of the offence of destroying or damaging an aircraft, they were both treated as adults when they were most likely minors.
On 10 September 2024, the panel of judges found the charges of the prosecution inadmissible, found the defendants to be minors, and released the defendants from custody.
