- Additional description
Frans Wasini was arrested on 20 May 2021 in Sentani, Jayapura in relation to his role in the 2019 West Papua Uprising. Frans Wasini is a student activist who took part in an anti-racism protest in Jayapura on 29 August 2019. According to reports he was placed in police search list on 13 September 2019 for taking part in the anti-racism coordination meeting on 27 August 2019 and for distributing pamplhets in relation to the protest. Frans Wasini was arrested within the same month as Victor Yeimo who was arrested on 9 May 2021. His trial began on 30th September 2021 after being postponed for several times before the Public Prosecutor read out the indictment. On 7 December his lawyer submitted a rebuttal to the indictment however it was denied. The trial continued with witness examination on 21 December 2021. Activists from Cenderawasih University (Universitas Cenderawasih, UNCEN) have called for their immediate release to the police in October 2021. He was released from police detention on 17 February after his term of arrest expired. His trial continued on 18 February and charged him for treason and incitement. However, at trial on 15 March, he was found not guilty of treason but guilty of incitement to commit a criminal act. He has been sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment, although the prosecutors had originally demanded 10 years. Prosecutors appealed the verdict on 18 March and on 30 March it was reported that the judges are reviewing evidence of appeal from the Prosecutors.
