- Additional description
Police personnel blockade and disperse a demonstration by Papuan and Indonesian students in Makassar, 2 December 2024. The demonstration was held to commemorate West Papua's Independence Day, 1 December 1961.
The police blocked the demonstrators on the grounds of preventing possible clashes with reactionary nationalist groups. The Papuan students insisted on holding the demonstration because they had sent a notification letter to the police and the police were supposed to provide protection. Negotiations deadlocked, the police forcibly dispersed them by firing tear gas.
During the chaos, the police arrested three people: DR, AR (legal representative), and one Papuan student. The three of them were released from Makassar Police Station in the evening.
