Security officers arrested Yopi Balingga at Jayapura Port on 17 July 2025. Yopi was alleged to be a courier for an armed group tasked with smuggling ammunition illegally.

On 24 October 2025, Yopi's case file was transferred to the Jayapura District Attorney's Office. In early December, his case was registered at the Jayapura District Court.

According to the indictment, Yopi came into possession of 16 rounds of ammunition that he found underground while cleaning his garden in 2024. He stored the ammunition in his dormitory room for some time, until he decided to take it to Jayapura to sell it for Rp5000.000 (£300) per round to pay for his tuition fees. It is unclear who the buyer was.
