Mimika police personnel arrested Yunus Temep around Kali Gogi, Jaita Village, Asmat Regency, on 7 September 2023. Yunus was arrested when he was allegedly about to deliver food and money to Egianus Kogoya, the leader of a pro-independence armed group in Nduga Regency.
His case was brought to the Wamena District Court on 12 December 2022, charged with being involved in the deprivation of liberty of another person, in this case Susi Air Pilot Philip Mehrtens who was held hostage by Egianus Kogoya's group.
On 29 February 2024, the panel of judges at the Wamena District Court found Yunus guilty and sentenced him to 4 years in prison, one year less than the prosecutor's sentence.
