A joint TNI-Polri force reportedly shot dead TPNPB armed group leader Marthen Aikingging in Kampung Meyah Lama, West Moskona District, Bintuni Bay, 18 December 2024.
Police claimed that Marthen was wanted for the murder of four civilians working on the Trans Bintuni-Maybrat road on 29 September 2022.
According to the TPNPB spokesperson, there was a shootout before Marthen was killed. Marthen was rumoured to be missing. A few days later it was discovered that Marthen had been shot but was still conscious. Security forces then reportedly took Marthen to a swamp, where he was tortured by beating and stabbing him until he was helpless. Marthen was wrapped in a tarpaulin and thrown into the swamp while still alive. Three days later, the authorities took Marthen's body to a hospital in Bintuni under heavy guard. Until his burial, his family was reportedly barred from seeing his body.
According to a man claiming to be Marthen's family, Marthen was shot dead in the village and his body was brought to Bintuni town on Friday night (20/12/2024), and on Saturday (21/12/2024) he was buried. ‘Marten Aikingging was shot dead in the village. When he was about to be buried, the family was forbidden to open the coffin to see him,’ the man said as reported by Suarapapua.com and Jubi.id.
