Nabire police personnel forcibly dispersed a demo of KNPB activists commemorating the 1962 New York Agreement in a number of places in Nabire, 15 August 2024. Apart from being dispersed, the police also arrested at least 99 activists (police version: 96).
The police broke up five gathering points for the activists: Kali Bobo, Siriwini, Karang Market, SP, and Jepara II. During the dispersal, activists were kicked and beaten using iron bars, rattan, and rifle butts. Two activists were shot by the authorities and had to be rushed to hospital. The arrested activists were dried in the hot sun on the Nabire Police field.
According to the police, of the over 90 people arrested, five were detained for further questioning. Two of them were Marten Dogomo and Apedus Tebai. They were both charged with damage to insult the national emblem and damage to property.
Three others were charged with possession of sharp weapons.
On 31 October, Dogomo and Tebai cases were registered at Nabire District Court with the case classification of Flag, Language, and State Emblem and National Anthem. On 4 December 2024, the panel of judges found them guilty of violating the article on destruction of property and sentenced them to 5 months in prison, in accordance with the prosecutor's demands.
