Satgas Damai Cartenz and Polres Dogiyai arrested a TPNPB member named Peni Pekei in Ekaugida Village, Paniai, 17 May 2024. He was arrested based on a 2015 police report and a 2016 DPO record. He was allegedly involved in extortion, threatening, theft, and illegal possession of firearms.
According to armed group leaders who knew Pekei, he had never been involved in any acts of violence. The allegations against him are those against several other members of the armed group, whose cases have been tried and they have served their sentences.
As of the end of June 2024, there has been no further news regarding the legal process.
As of 15 August 2024, Pekey's case is still at the investigation stage of the Papua Police. He is suspected of theft with violence or threat of violence.
On 22 October 2024, the case was registered at Nabire District Court. On 13 March 2025, the panel of judges found Pekey not guilty of the first charge (theft with violence) and guilty of the second charge (extortion with violence) and therefore sentenced him to one year in prison, six months less than the prosecutor's demand.
