- Additional description
Personnel from the Dekai Military Command arrested a young Papuan man, Son Balingga, at a small petrol station near the Dekai Military Command, Yahukimo, Papua Pegunungan Province, on 6 August 2025. He was arrested on suspicion of being an accomplice to someone who had previously come to the petrol station brandishing a weapon.
Son Balingga and his friend, LK, had arrived early at the kiosk to fill up with petrol. The kiosk owner, who is a member of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), failed to apprehend the unknown individual. Son Balingga remained behind, as his friend also fled in fear.
As of the end of September 2025, Son Balingga was reportedly still being detained by the Yahukimo Police without any clarity on further legal proceedings. The police told his parents and local KNPB activists that Son's case originated from a report by the koramil (military sub-district command), so the family had to go to the koramil first. At the koramil, the family was asked to go to the kodim (military district command) because their leaders were there, or to the police station because the case was being handled by the police.
