Maybrat police officers arrested Karel Fatem at SP 2 in Sorong Regency on 14 May 2023 afternoon. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the attack on Posramil Kisor that killed four TNI soldiers. In its development, Fatem was also charged with being involved in the murder of a soldier named Miskel Rumbiak who was on duty working on a bridge in Aifuf.
For the Posramil Kisor case (207/Pid.B/2023/PN Son), prosecutors demanded that Fatem be sentenced to 20 years in prison. As for the Miskel Rumbiak case (257/Pid.B/2023/PN Son), the prosecutor demanded that the defendant be sentenced to death.
On 7 January 2024, Fatem became one of 53 prisoners who escaped from Sorong Prison. He was recaptured by South Sorong Police on 29 January 2024.
On 25 April 2024, the Sorong District Court panel of judges found Fatem guilty of participating in premeditated murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment, while the prosecutor had sought the death penalty.
On 4 June 2024, a panel of judges from the Manokwari High Court upheld the decision of the Sorong District Court.
On 19 July 2024, the public prosecutor filed an appeal to the Supreme Court against the decision of the West Papua High Court. On 19 September 2024, the Panel of Cassation Judges sentenced Karel Fatem to death. Since the trial at the district court level, prosecutors have demanded that Karel be given the death penalty.
