- Additional description
Nabire police officers allegedly arbitrarily arrested and tortured Yeremias Magai to death on 3 to 4 September 2024. Magai was arrested because he was allegedly involved in the persecution that caused the death of a security guard named Supriyono at the Security Post of CV Kurnia Jasa Mandiri, Jalan Poros Samabusa, Nabire Regency, 23 August 2024.
Magai was a catechist at Santo Antonius Bumi Wonorejo Parish and a member of the Civil Service Police in the Nabire local government. When handed over to the family, Magai's body was already dressed in full clothes and his coffin had been wrapped by the Nabire Police.
Apart from Magai, the police also arrested two other men, Ken Boga and Agustinus Tagi.
According to the family through their lawyer, the three were arrested and tortured to confess. The three of them were in another district more than 60 kilometres away from the murder scene at the time of the incident. In his statement to the Magai family, the police chief claimed to have been pressurised by Supriyono's brother, who is a senior officer at the Cenderawasih Military Command.
The police relied on CCTV footage of two men, one of whom was allegedly Magai, selling Supriyono's mobile phone at a kiosk. The family disputed this evidence because Magai's body features and the man in the footage were very different.
At least until the end of September 2024, the family is still demanding justice and police accountability for Magai's death.
