In order to find the Susi Air pilot held hostage by TPNPB in Nduga, security forces conducted search operations in Nduga and a number of surrounding regencies. One of them was in Lanny Jaya Regency.
Local human rights activists reported that during the operation, the authorities carried out arbitrary arrests and detention as well as torture against a number of civilians. One of them was Ependak Karunggu.
Karunggu and several other people were arrested and taken to the military headquarters in Timika, Mimika Regency. Allegedly subjected to severe torture, Karunggu was returned to Lanny Jaya suffering from injuries, including burn injuries, on 20 April 2023.
