Rumours of child abduction sparked the riots that broke out in Sinakma, Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency. Clashes between police and residents were inevitable, 12 people were killed, 8 of whom were killed by gunfire. On 24 February 2023, police arrested 13 people who were considered provocateurs, but they were all released four days later.
