Police arrested Nias Wanimbo in Wamena for his alleged involvement in the murder of female activist Michelle Kurisi Doga/Maikelin Mandosir Kurisi. Wanimbo is said to be a member of the KNPB - and the local KNPB denies the allegations.
Wanimbo is currently on trial at the Jayapura District Court. On 19 August 2024, a panel of judges at the Jayapura District Court found Nias guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, 5 years less than the prosecutor's demands.
On 26 August 2024, Nias filed an appeal against the judge's decision. But a month later he withdrew it. On 10 October 2024, a panel of judges at the Jayapura District Court decided to uphold the previous verdict.
