Vara Iyaba is one among four KNPB members who were arrested on 14 June 2022 during a peaceful rally in commemoration of death of Mako Tabuni, prominent West Papuan activist and former deputy Chairman of KNPB who was shot and killed by the Indonesian. The rally on 14 June 2022 which was held in Jayapura was forcibly dispersed with reports of 6 rally participants injured by police actions. Four people were taken into custody: Wene Kilungga, Vara Iyaba, Edi Tabuni and Ferry Molama. They were all released after brief detention on the same day.
