Indonesian military members reportedly tortured Kristo Gonus Okui Kaize, an indigenous Papuan labourer from the Malind Maklew tribe, at the PSN Wanam project site in Ilwayab District, Merauke, on 10 February 2026. The soldiers reportedly beat him with metal objects, pulled out his toenail with pliers, and threatened to kill him without prior questioning. Kaize suffered head wounds, broken teeth, bruises, and rib injuries before escaping and later receiving medical treatment in Wanam Village. Villagers later found Kaize unconscious and brought him to a local health centre for treatment.
