Indonesian military and correctional officers allegedly shot and killed Zet Tare, a 32-year-old prison fugitive, in Kaimana Town, West Papua, on 4 February 2026. Military and prison officials reportedly fired several shots at Tare and subjected him to physical violence, resulting in his death. According to a witness, prior to his death, Tare had been apprehended by security forces as a fugitive after escaping from prison in December 2025. At the time of his arrest, Tare is said to have offered no resistance, contrary to the official account. Tare’s body was under close guard by security forces and prison officers, from the time it was examined at the hospital until it was buried.
