Yapen police personnel arrested four people affiliated with the Republic of Melanesia in South Yapen District, Serui Islands Regency, 22 January 2024. The four people were Phillips L. Wanggai, Yuflius Frans Kareni, Gad Sendiairora Fonataba, and Soleman Fonataba.
The four of them were arrested while holding a meeting of ‘The National Converence of the Full Government of the Republic of Melanesia’ at a church in Yapen.
On 7 May 2024, their case was registered with the Serui District Court under case number 24/Pid.B/2024/PN Sru, classified as crimes against state security.
The public prosecutor sought five years‘ imprisonment for Phillips and Soleman, three years’ imprisonment for Yuflius and Gad Fonataba.
On 12 June 2024, the panel of judges at the Serui District Court found them guilty and sentenced Phillips and Soleman to three years in prison, and Yuflius and Gad Fonataba to one year and six months.
